Serverless Computing at the Edge: Running Docker Hub Images as Firecracker MicroVMs

Edge Developers Conference

OpenNebula now supports Firecracker, a new virtualization technology widely used by AWS’ Fargate and Lambda platforms and especially designed for running secure, multi-tenant container and function-based services.

Firecracker microVMs provide enhanced security and workload isolation over traditional VMs, while enabling the speed and efficiency of containers.

OpenNebula is an open source cloud platform that can leverage resources from bare-metal providers to build on-demand Edge Clouds. It comes with seamless integration with Docker Hub, so the new support for Firecracker opens up a whole new world of possibilities for Serverless Computing at the Edge.

In this talk we will explain the technical details of this integration and will show a live demo on how to easily deploy and orchestrate a composition of Docker Hub images running as Firecracker microVMs on a distributed bare-metal Edge infrastructure.
