The internet was designed to enable communications in a decentralized manner. But, cloud computing is increasingly being delivered in a highly concentrated, highly centralized manner. Since data is increasingly collected, analyzed, and consumed at the edge, it makes sense for compute, networking, and storage to be delivered at the edge as well. Storj built an exabyte scale decentralized, edge based storage system based on a marketplace of independently owned and operated storage nodes around the globe. Similar efforts are underway in many parts of the cloud computing stack. This session discusses the design decisions, tradeoffs, and practical lessons to achieve scale, security, usability, durability, performance, and workable economics.
